CLASS DESCRIPTION
The Copperplate style of calligraphy has a few different names: Roundhand, Engrosser’s Script, or Copperplate. Developed at the Vatican in the 1400’s, it was made popular in England in the 1700’s. Our Declaration of Independence was written in this style.
Copperplate is distinguished by thin and thick lines, a consistent slant and rhythm, and a pleasing look which is easy to read.
You will learn the pointed pen method: a nib fits into the pen holder, it is dipped into ink, and then one writes until the next dip is needed. The style is controlled and slow – you literally cannot go fast. It can be a very quiet and meditative art to practice, and a fun skill to share by way of a lovely envelope, place card, gift tag, etc…
In this 5 class series you’ll learn to control the pen, then make the basic lines and shapes that are used to create all the letters, and then the lowercase letters- known as miniscules.
There will be a follow up class series where you’ll build your skills by learning capital letters- known as majiscules, numbers, flourishes and how to set up and create place cards, envelopes, quotes or poems, etc…
Supplies provided (additional $45 fee – due at first class):
1 oblique pen holder, 4 nibs, black ink, ink holder (dinky dips with wooden stand), Copperplate practice pad
